Black sage, scientifically known as Varronia curassavica (synonym Cordia curassavica), belongs to the Boraginaceae family. Also referred to as wild sage or tropical black sage, it differs from Salvia mellifera, another unrelated species called black sage.

Black sage is a fragrant shrub, reaching 3 m in height with lanceolate to ovate leaves, 40–100 mm long and 15–60 mm wide. Clusters of small white funnel-shaped flowers and fleshy red fruits with a single 4–5 mm seed adorn its many branches
