: Details
Perilla is an edible species commonly cultivated in gardens, where it also serves to attract butterflies. The plant releases a pronounced mint-like fragrance, largely due to the presence of perilla ketone, the principal volatile compound responsible for its distinctive aroma. This compound occurs in especially high concentrations in the leaves of Perilla frutescens.
