The genus Lavandula (lavender) of Lamiaceae family consists of about 30 species, many of which are found in Mediterranean, Sahara-Arabian and Iran-Turanian regions. A large part of the aroma and fl avor of this plant is due to the presence of es- sential oils, some constituents of which have also shown to have biological activity and could be responsible for the plants use in folk medicine. Lavender is a perennial herb with upright spikes of small aromatic blue or violet fl owers.
