Members of the genus Limnophila (family: Scrophulari- aceae), commonly known as ‘Ambulia’ (Asian marsh- weed) are aquatic, or nearly aquatic, perennial herbs found as submersed, emergent and amphibious stem plants.

They are distributed from Southeast Asia, tropical to subtropical Africa, Australia and the Pacific Islands. They are widely distributed throughout India,and occupy a significant position in traditional systems of medicine. Limnophila rugosa (Roth.) Merr. isused in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases like pestilent fever, elephantiasis,diarrhea, dysentery and dyspepsia
